Crime Does Not Pay

Crime Does Not Pay was an anthology crime drama produced by Metro
Goldwyn Mayer. It was based on a short film series of the same name, begun in
1935 by MGM,
and related tales of perpetrators of crime and the purported inevitable penalties
for their ill-advised actions. Each show was introduced by a narrator, with
the following:
“In the interests of good citizenship and law enforcement we present Crime
Does Not Pay, based on the famous Metro Goldwyn Mayer series of short subjects.“
Because the focus was frequently on crimes prompted by social ills, it is probable
that the impetus for the original MGM film series was the great depression.
The radio series was written by Ira Marion, and directed by Marx B. Loeb, and
included an occasional appearance by a major MGM star, including Bela Lugosi,
Everett Sloane, Ed Begley, John Loder and Lionel Stander. The first show was
broadcast from WMGM in New York in October of 1949; the final broadcast was
aired in December of 1952. The 68 shows in this collection include the first
broadcast “Kid with a Gun” starring Donald Buka, as well as broadcasts
through April 1951.

The sound quality of Old Time Radio Programs can vary greatly. Some episodes
are excellent, others you have to turn up the volume a little and ignore the static.
