Mystery is My Hobby Old Time Radio Program
1/2 hour detective show
Broadcast before a live audience, Mystery is My Hobby is a classic
“whodunit” show from the gentleman-detective genre, starring Glen
Langan as Barton Drake. The conceit of the show is that Drake is the urbane,
well-to-do author of the book Mystery is My Hobby. Each episode he introduces
a true-to-life “case history” from his book, in which he is always
a central character. The dramatic action ensues, during which Drake cuts through
the mayhem to solve the crime du jour--be it murder, larceny or blackmail--with
the aplomb and savoir faire of a Peter Wimsey. He ends each episode explaining
how he solved the mystery to feckless lawmen and criminal alike with the tagline
“ . . . because mystery is my hobby”.
The star of the series—Glen Langan—made a successful transition from
radio and B-movie actor to frequent guest on the ubiquitous episodic TV shows
of the 50s and 60s. He is best know as the star of “The Amazing Colossal
Man”, the cult favorite from 1957.
Laden with dramatic musical stings and enthusiastic audience applause, each
episode began with the following: “Ladies & gentlemen, Barton Drake
speaking. For tonight’s drama, I’ve selected case history number __
from my book, Mystery is My Hobby. I call it . . .”
Although Mystery is My Hobby is not as well known as many of the other old-time
radio detective shows, it offers an intriguing half-hour of entertainment for
fans of the genre.
This set includes 79 half-hour shows originally produced by Mutual from 1945
through 1947.
All of our Old Time Radio Programs are in MP3 format. You can play them
on your computer, you can transfer them to MP3 players (like the IPod), but,
by and large, you cannot play them on stereos, walkmen, or car radios.
The sound quality of Old Time Radio Programs can vary greatly. Some episodes
are excellent, others you have to turn up the volume a little and ignore the static.
All of the episodes can be listened to and enjoyed. You can listen to our free
samples to get a feel for how the programs sound.

These episodes are downloadable in large zip files. To open a zip file you need software to "unzip" it. Your computer may already have unzip software, if this is the case, just click on the file and your software will automatically open up and you can unzip the files. If your computer doesn't have an unzip program, you can get one from the internet. The files are large - it will take you a few minutes to download each file. A full CD worth of episodes takes about 14 large files. if you are on dial-up, we highly recommend you buy a CD.
