Challenge of the Yukon Old Time Radio Program CD 1
"On King, on you huskies!"
First aired in 1947, Sergeant Preston of the Yukon is considered to
be the best loved and best remembered of the radio juvenile dramas. Produced
by George Trendle, the same radio station owner who presented The Lone Ranger
and The Green Hornet, Sergeant Preston was originally aired as Challenge
of the Yukon. By 1953 the title was changed to the name of the hero, who
epitomized the popular concept of the Mountie as incorruptible, brave and resolute.
With cries of "On King! On you huskies", Preston would set forth with
his marvelous lead dog King to capture evildoers. King, the "swiftest and
strongest lead dog in the Northwest", and variously described as malamute
or husky, was arguably the real hero of the adventures.
The idea for Challenge of the Yukon may have come from "King of
the Royal Mounted", a popular comic book of the period.
The role of Sergeant Preston was originated by Jay Michael, then played by
Paul Sutton. In 1954, Brace Beemer, who had voiced The Lone Ranger, took
over the role until the show ended in 1955, when it premiered as a television
series.
