Superman on the radio was called the “Adventures of Superman”, but
everyone just calls it Superman. Superman, created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster,
debuted in Action Comics in 1938. The radio show went from 1940 to 1951, airing
over 1,000 episodes. Using his ability to fly, his super strength, and heat
ray vision, Superman, the strange visitor from another planet, would fight for
"truth, justice and the American way" in these 15 minute episodes. The show
was almost cancelled in 1942, but kids everywhere protested faster than speeding
bullets, and the show was saved. The cast was rounded out by Lois Lane (Joan
Alexander), Perry White (Julian Noa), Jimmy Olsen (Jackie Kelk), and all of
the villains. And make no mistake, the villains were bad guys, there is no moral
gray area, the bad guys are bad and the good guys are good.
Just as Superman would not reveal his identity to anyone, the actor playing Superman was “Top Secret.” Only in 1946 did actor Clayton Collyer step forward and announce that he was Superman. He did this to promote a Superman campaign against racial and religious intolerance. In another example of Superman taking on tough social issues, there is a famous four episode storyline in which Superman attacks the Klu Klux Klan, based on a human right’s activist’s infiltration of the KKK. Another superhero teamed up with Superman often, Batman. Batman and Robin appeared on Superman’s program, but never got their own program. Unfortunately for Batman fans, Batman came off a little like a sidekick, he couldn’t fly, had no superstrength, and no cool heat ray vision.
