Big Town was a popular long-running radio drama series which was later adapted to both film and television and a comic book published by DC Comics.
Big Town is a story about Steve Wilson, managing editor of the crusading Illustrated Press, and his pursuit of truth and justice. Lorelei Kilbourne was the paper's Society Editor, and Wilson's investigative partner. Lorelei and Steve followed stories that touched on a range of issues in America, including s juvenile delinquency, racism, drunk driving, and of course, murder and intringue.
The radio program aired from 1937 to 1952. Written by Jerry McGill, with theme music by Fran Frey. Edward G. Robinson had the lead role of Steve Wilson from 1937 to 1942. Claire Trevor, then Ona Munson played the role of the paper's Society Editor, Lorelei Kilbourne. Edward J. Pawley portrayed Steve Wilson from 1943 until 1952 when Walter Greaza was heard as Wilson in the final episodes. Fran Carlon played Pawley's sidekick, Lorelei Kilbourne, from 1942-1952.
During the period in which Pawley starred, Big Town was rated No. 1 among all of the reporter-type drama series on radio. It was also rated in the top 15 among all radio programs broadcast and had a listening audience rated between 10 and 20 million people.
There were 4 movies made and ran on television from 1950 to 1956. And the DC Comics run lasted over 50 issues from 1950 to 1958. Gorman. One nice touch, when the Captain was replaced with a different actor, the reason given was that the Captain had been promoted above the Precinct level.
