30 minute detective show
Michael Shayne, the "reckless red-headed Irishman" created in detective novels by Brett Halliday, premiered regionally in 1944. In 1946 the program went national when it moved to Mutual. Shayne was originally played by Wally Maher and Cathy Lewis played the girlfriend/secretary/partner Phyliss Knight. Joe Forte played teh inspector. The scripts were written by Richard de Graffe. Maher had been known as playing gangsters and hoodlums, here he played the same type of tough guy, but (generally) on the right side of justice, if not on the right side of the law. The program follows the more noir, tough guy detective genre, with Phyliss softening the edge. In 1948 Jeff Chandler took over the role (and the show was renamed: The New Adventures of Michael Shayne.) The show was rebooted again in 1952 with Donald Curtis taking over the lead, and now called: "Michael Shayne, Private Detective." Shayne did make it to television in the early 1960, starring Richard Denning.
Brett Halliday created the dectective in 1939 with the novel "Dividend on Death", in all 77 Shayne detective novels were published by Halliday and a variety of ghost writers. The hard-boiled detective also appeared in 12 movies, 300 short stories, a magazine, a few comic book appearances, and, of course, these radio programs.
